The company, which operates 5,500 rental stores in the US and Europe, filed for court bankruptcy protection to allow it to remain in business and continue a drive to expand its digital and kiosk-based rental unit.
Total spending on video rentals declined 4.9% to $3 billion as retail chain Movie Gallery closed stores, and consumers flocked to the fast-growing number of $1-a-night DVD rental kiosks like the ones operated by Redbox. Kiosk revenue was up 55%.

Just when the inevitable delisting of Blockbuster (NYSE: BBI) seemed to all but kill the debt-saddled DVD rental chain, NCR (NYSE: NCR) is whipping out the defibrillator.
NCR has struck a deal with QuikTrip to install Blockbuster Express kiosks in nearly all of the chain’s 555 convenience stores.

It’s another blow for Blockbuster(BBI), as a proxy advisory firm recommends the company appoints an activist investor who has been attempting to get on its board.
Buckling under the competitive pressure from movies-by-mail service Netflix Inc., DVD kiosk company Redbox and delivery of movies and TV shows over the Internet, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February. It was the nation’s second-largest movie rental chain.

Services such as Netflix, Redbox kiosks, and movies-on-demand are taking a chunk out of the market share of bricks-and-mortar video stores.
The advantage of these new services is simple: convenience. Redbox kiosks are accessible outside convenience stores and McDonald’s anytime. Netflix is as close as your home computer. On-demand doesn’t even require moving to the computer — just hit a few buttons on your remote.
