The company, which operates 5,500 rental stores in the US and Europe, filed for court bankruptcy protection to allow it to remain in business and continue a drive to expand its digital and kiosk-based rental unit.

Gregg Kaplan, president and COO of Coinstar Inc. spoke by phone with editor Burney Simpson last week after the Bellevue, Wash.-based kiosk operator announced deals with CVS/Pharmacy and ecoATM. There are about 19,000 installed Coinstar coin-counting machines installed worldwide; its redbox device has helped change the DVD rental business. This is an edited version of Kaplan’s remarks.
Sales of self-serve check-out devices to the retail sector are on the cusp of a period of extended growth with new installations in grocery, big box and other large merchants. Meanwhile, consumers in North America will see several thousand more DVD kiosks at local shops by the end of the year.
“(Brick-and-mortar stores) are falling like dominos. Soon it’s going to be Netflix and redbox, if it’s not already. They serve two needs, redbox for new releases and Netflix for older movies,” Mendelsohn said.
With nearly two-thirds of its planned 10,000 Blockbuster Express rental kiosks allocated, NCR Corp. appears uncertain whether to increase the install base or focus on alternative distribution channels for home entertainment.
