The company, which operates 5,500 rental stores in the US and Europe, filed for court bankruptcy protection to allow it to remain in business and continue a drive to expand its digital and kiosk-based rental unit.
Total spending on video rentals declined 4.9% to $3 billion as retail chain Movie Gallery closed stores, and consumers flocked to the fast-growing number of $1-a-night DVD rental kiosks like the ones operated by Redbox. Kiosk revenue was up 55%.

Just when the inevitable delisting of Blockbuster (NYSE: BBI) seemed to all but kill the debt-saddled DVD rental chain, NCR (NYSE: NCR) is whipping out the defibrillator.

Shares of Blockbuster Inc. sank 30 percent Wednesday after the video rental chain warned that it may have to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
Competition from DVD-by-mail company Netflix Inc. and DVD vending machines operated by Coinstar Inc. have eroded the Dallas company’s revenue even as it staggers under a heavy debt load.
