Acquisition by California-based Public Media Works bolsters Canada’s second largest kiosk-based DVD movie, game rental company
The nation’s largest maker of ATMs embarked on its first retail venture last year by rolling out DVD-rental kiosks across the U.S., a move that’s part of a wider strategy to capture a piece of the rapidly transforming entertainment market.
And with Redbox boosting the number of its automated video-rental kiosks, the traditional video-store business model appears doomed. At this point, Blockbuster appears headed for the same fate as Movie Gallery. At one time, Movie Gallery was one of Blockbuster’s biggest brick-and-mortar competitors, but last week it filed for bankruptcy protection for the second time since 2007.
NCR (NCR) this morning said it will acquire DVDPlay, which operates about 1,300 DVD-rental kiosks in the U.S. and Canada. The company said it now expects to operate about 3,800 kiosks by the end of this year. Terms were not disclosed.
