On June 9 Redbox parent Coinstar announced it would install roughly 1,400 coin-counting kiosks in Safeway stores in the United States and Canada this year, and that could spell good news for Redbox kiosks as well, according to one analyst.
The term vending machine conjures up images of dropping coins in a slot to buy cola, candy or chips.
“(Brick-and-mortar stores) are falling like dominos. Soon it’s going to be Netflix and redbox, if it’s not already. They serve two needs, redbox for new releases and Netflix for older movies,” Mendelsohn said.
With nearly two-thirds of its planned 10,000 Blockbuster Express rental kiosks allocated, NCR Corp. appears uncertain whether to increase the install base or focus on alternative distribution channels for home entertainment.

Global Axcess Corp. on Thursday said its emerging DVD rental kiosk business helped drive first-quarter earnings increase of 229 percent to $318,568 compared to $96,762 in the first quarter of last year.
First quarter 2009 net income included non-cash expenses of $467,391 related to the payoff of debt balances with two senior lenders and related parties, the company said.
Upstart kiosk vendor EntertainmentXpress has signed a deal with a Pizza Hut franchise to offer DVD movie and video game rentals at 155 restaurants throughout Pennsylvania.
